How to Sign a Vehicle Title in California: Step-by-Step Guide

Before proceeding, it's advisable to thoroughly read these instructions, locate all relevant sections on the title, and review any accompanying guidelines. California offers four different types of titles, with helpful diagrams available on the state's website, which specify where to sign on each version. These instructions are based on the assumption that you possess a new "rainbow" title, distinct from the older "pink slip."

Instructions:

Owner's Signature on Front of Title:

Examine the front of the title near the middle section.

The current owner(s) should date and sign their names on the lines beneath the short declaration confirming the release of interest in the vehicle.

Below these lines, fill in the current odometer reading in the designated area. Then, date and sign your name on the lines provided under the odometer reading.

Buyer's Information on Back of Title:

The buyer must flip over the car title and locate the top section.

Complete the series of boxes across the top, providing the following information: Full name of the new owner, full name of any second owner (if applicable), mailing address, city, state, zip code, and physical address where the car will be kept (if different).

Once entered, the buyer should sign their name on the line labeled "Signature of new registered owner." Adjacent to this, input your driver's license number, followed by the purchase date. If there is a second owner, they should provide the same information on the next line if applicable.
