How to Sign a Vehicle Title in Alabama: Step-by-Step Guide
Title Transfer for Sellers/Registered Owners
If there are unreleased liens on the title, obtain a lien release signed by the lienholder or an original release document.
On the back of the title, under "ASSIGNMENT OF TITLE BY REGISTERED OWNER," fill out the upper part.
Enter the date in the provided space.
Print the buyer's full name and address clearly in the designated areas.
Record the odometer reading in the specified area (omit if the vehicle is over ten years old). Do not include tenths.
The buyer should sign and print their name(s) as indicated.
Sellers must print and sign their name(s) exactly as it appears on the front of the title.
Indicate "NONE" in the lienholder section if applicable.
Retain your license plates.
Create a Bill of Sale including necessary vehicle details and personal information of both parties. Both should sign this document.
For additional help, refer to Alabama Department of Revenue.
Important Notes:
Avoid using correction fluid, erasing, or making any marks that could void the document.
Write neatly in black or blue ink, using actual names and avoiding nicknames.
Any errors can void the document, so be careful to avoid mistakes.
